The classification of Mario de Andrade’s collection of his private library

Abstract

This article is based on a research that describes the classification created by Mario de Andrade that intends to organize his private library’s collection, in order to understand if this classification may be useful to other private libraries. Therefore, a literature review was written on Mario de Andrade’s life and work, on the aspects related to bibliophilia and on the history of documentary classification. The methodology consisted in the use of collect techniques and data analysis. Hence, visits to the informational and cultural units related to the research theme and an interview with the technical supervisor of IEB-USP library have happened. Thereby, the result was the presentation of several approaches between the classification created by the writer and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Besides, Mario de Andrade’s classification was thought from a special and thematic organization according to the writer’s particular interests and to the location where his collection was preserved in the rooms of his house. Thus, it is possible to conclude that Mario de Andrade’s classification may be used in other private libraries, adapting to the necessities and particularities of each particular collection’s owner.
